Hemi-epiphytic or terrestrial. Stem semi-erect, decumbent and sprawling, branching sparingly in basal parts, up to 3.5 m tall and 5-13 cm in diameter; adventitious roots dimorphic in epiphytic plants: anchor roots of smaller diameter and feeder roots of larger diameter, additionally aerial roots as prop roots giving support to stem; internodes small, ca. 1 mm or less; foliage leaf scars circular to transverse-elliptic. Prophylls deciduous, up to 45 cm long. Petiole 70-150 cm long, 0.7- 1.7 cm in diameter at apex, broadly sulcate adaxially, convex or rounded abaxially, sheath ca. 12 cm long on leaves subtending inflorescences. Leaf blades 75-120 cm x 60-120 cm, usually bipinnatifid, either weakly or strongly so, occasionally pinnatifid, variable in lobe and sinus shape, upper surface glossy dark green, lower surface paler, +/- glossy.
